Dear Theophilus:: December 2003
Cribs: Emmanuel Style
Dear Theophilus' first installment of Cribs features John Yoon. John is a graduate of Temple University, and is a member of the Phileo fellowship. Currently, he resides in Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania.
DT: Nice TV dude
John: Thanks, it's all right.
DT: Hey, do you have a tape recorder?
John: Aren't you supposed to have one?
DT: Anyway, what do you have to say about your room?
John: Uh… it's white. Most of the stuff is from IKEA. I think your room needs some remodeling, want me to come over this week?
DT: Hmm… very tempting, I'll call you. What's with the two guitars? Isn't that a bit excessive?
John: I love playing the guitar, it's an awesome gift God blessed me with. I used to play a lot during college so I bought a second one as a back up guitar.
DT: Let's move on to your bookcase. Hmm… Shakespeare anthology. What's so great about Shakespeare?
John: He's one of the greatest English writers…
DT: But what makes you interested in Shakespeare?
John: Hmm… well honestly, I'm a closet sap. I love English literature, especially works during the Romantic period. Wait, you're not writing this down, are you?
DT: Uhh no. Reading up on the book of Mormon, are you?
John: Well I've been trying to learn more about different religions, especially the Mormons aka Latter Day Saints and the Jehovah's Witnesses. I hope by learning more about these religions I can be a more effective witness to them.
DT: Who are those two little kids in that picture?
John: Oh that's me and my childhood friend Salome. We grew up together until the age of three, then she moved away. A couple years back I was able to get in touch with her again and we've been the closest of friends. She's one in a billion… a friend and sister I can always rely on.
DT: I think my first memory was of eating paste in kindergarten.
John: That explains a lot. Kidding.
DT: What's up with the dial-up internet? No cable modem or DSL?
John: Unfortunately no at this time. I think the Lord wants me to stick with dial-up internet. Believe me I've tried to get cable and dsl to no avail.
DT: Wait, what's with the Sleepless in Seattle mug?
John: Uhh… what Sleepless in Seattle mug? (trying to conceal mug)
DT: The one on your desk, John.
John: Oh that mug! (nervous laughter) A good friend in Seattle sent it to me as a Christmas gift.
DT: Why would a supposed good friend send you something like that?
John: It's the thought that counts. And she gave me a sweater too.
DT: I'm not sure that makes up for it… oh well. That's a cool snowboard you have there.
John: Thanks, you snowboard?
DT: Nah, don't think I'm tough enough.
John: Yeah it can be painful at first, but its so much fun after getting the hang of it!
DT: Maybe I'll try it this season.
John: Sounds good. Want to go for a run?
DT: Uhh… it's kind of late. Ok let's go.
