Meet and Greet: Derrick, Emmanuel's Security Guard
Interviewed by David Sung and Michelle Yee
Every Sunday, before we are warmly greeted by the hospitality committee in the sanctuary, we are joyfully welcomed by a glowing smile in the parking lot. While some recognize Derrick by his contagious smile and gold tooth, it's how Derrick cheerfully serves us that inspires and touches our hearts. Derrick, our church security guard, has been serving Emmanuel for the past five to six months. David and I had the pleasure of sitting down with Derrick over s'mores and sandwiches one Sunday afternoon and talk about life, sports, family, and love.
For Derrick, family is a foundation to a rich life. Derrick grew up in Philadelphia near Temple University and was raised alongside seven sisters and five brothers - he's the third from the youngest! Today, with his significant other, Sheron, he has five kids ranging in ages from eight to seventeen. Outside of family life, Derrick is also an accomplished, world-class athlete. Derrick is known on and off the basketball court as "KJ" by those close to him (nicknamed after Phoenix Suns Point Guard Kevin Johnson). One little known fact is that Derrick has played basketball all around the world and savors his memories of playing baseball in Veterans Memorial Stadium when he was younger.
Derrick works full time during the week at a telephone company, and he heard about the opportunity at Emmanuel Church through a former work colleague. What began as an ordinary side job, turned into so much more!
What do you like best about Emmanuel Church?
I like how everyone chips in together to help out. Despite the language difference between the congregations, the church is unified - unified in its desire to serve each other.
You always seem so happy and joyful. Where does your happiness come from?
It's just the way I am. I've always been like this, even in my previous jobs. The smiles and waving hands from the church attendants in their cars bring a smile to my face.
What is your motto when coming to work?
I just hope everything goes ok during my shift.
How would you like Emmanuel attendants to treat you?
Be genuine, be yourself.
You seem content with the love you've found. Can you give the guys at Emmanuel any tips?
A woman needs to be generous and show selflessness. So many women today are consumed with themselves.
While it's easy to expect joy and genuine happiness in the people who serve you at church, it's harder to find. May we continue to seek fellowship and embrace those that serve us, even those who serve us in less visible ways.
