Guy on the Street

From Christmas to the Fourth of July, it's all here. In this issue's "Guy on the Street" we asked: What is your favorite holiday memory? At times humorous and at others poignant, these are the stories that some of our brothers and sisters were kind enough to share with us. As we make new memories this year, the DT wishes you all happy and joyful holidays.

My favorite holiday memory is an impromptu holiday that my family took a few years back. My mother was looking for a job, and had gotten an interview in a small town in Colorado. However, because it was far away, she didn't want to drive up alone. In the end, my sister and I decided to go with her, and stay the weekend. It was a small, picturesque mountain town. We rented a hotel for the weekend, and spent our time soaking in the natural hot springs and horseback riding. It was a great weekend.

As a child, Christmas was my favorite time of year. My sister had gotten fancy Barbie doll sets she had always wanted every Christmas. I liked getting monetary gifts from Santa rather than toys or other goodies. It might sound so dull but being able to save quite a lot of money from my Christmas presents was one of those exciting moments in my life. As much as I care about the meaning of Christmas and other purposes, I did enjoy getting my present from Santa.

One of my favorite holiday memories was this past Fourth of July when I got to hang out with my little cousin, Alyssa. We played with sparklers and wrote our names in the air. My dad took lots of pictures even though it was dark. When the fireworks came on it was funny because Alyssa still thinks fireworks are cool, but she tries to be grown-up and not show it. We sat outside and watched them even after the parents had gone back into the house. I told her that she must be much braver than I was since when I was her age fireworks still spooked me and I called them 'thunderstars.' It was fun to talk to her and to see how much she's growing up.

Last Christmas was a very special holiday for me - it was the first time in a while that my whole immediate family were able to get together for a holiday (my dad travels to Korea often for business and I have been on-call at work on previous holidays). My niece, Rachelle, just turned 2 years old- so we celebrated her birthday and Christmas together. What I remember the most was my mom and dad who were so happy and thrilled when Rachelle kept wanting us to relight the candles so that we can sing "Happy birthday" over and over again so that she could repeatedly blow out the candles. I feel that this is what GOD wants -- for us to enjoy our family and to find happiness in the simple pleasures of life !!

I'll never forget the Christmas when my sisters and I recreated Cinderella for my parents. I was only five at the time and utterly gullible. My sisters convinced me that I had been naughty all year and this was the single redemptive act I could do for Santa. I remember playing a few different roles in the play but fortunately I was accustomed to being dressed up as a girl by my dear sisters.
