When most Christians (especially the ones around my age, 21) hear the name Newsboys, they cringe in disgust and make some comment about hating mindless crappy pop music, and I couldn’t agree more, I hate mindless pop music as well; problem is, Newsboys do not make mindless pop music.

Yeah, yeah, settle down, you read that last line correctly. Trust me, up until recently I was under the impression that Newsboys were just some useless Brit-pop band without much actual substance to their work; no longer. About a month or so before this summer break past I was browsing my university’s network for some music to put on my computer, and I came across a stash of Christian music, among which was four or five Newsboys albums. Now, I had ALWAYS bashed the Newsboys for as long as I can remember though I had NEVER listened to even ONE complete album of theirs (I know, I know, talk about worst hypocrite Christian ever) so I decided to give them a fair shake. After the first twenty seconds or so of the song “Beautiful Sound”, I realized that I had made a VERY heinous error in judgment. I perused the rest of the selections and found almost all of them to be wonderful songs with deep lyrics and good music; even the cheesy sounding songs like “Take Me To Your Leader” were chock full of lyrical skills. So, from then on I have loved the Newsboys… which brings us to their new album, Adoration.

In Newsboys’ past albums, there have always a few songs on each that were praise & worship (P&W), but never an album specifically devoted to P&W, but that’s where Adoration comes in to play. Adoration is subtitled “the worship album” for a good reason. It is an album where each song is P&W, and believe you me when I say that it is GOOD. I personally believe that Newsboys are in their prime when they are making P&W, and this album completely backs up that theory. Every song is dripping with Godliness, complete with two live songs. I mention the live songs because in the age of ProTools post production, many bands suck live, as actually being able to sing and play instruments are no longer prerequisites for being a band. I am pleased to say that the Newsboys are not one of these bands, so fear not as to the quality of the live songs.

I think that every Christian should listen to Newsboys and give them a chance, I guarantee that if you get past the same prejudiced view that I had of them as a mindless Brit-pop band that you’ll like what you find, ESPECIALLY with this new album. I absolutely love Adoration and I am sure you will as well.
