One December day last year I woke up to the radio station Q102. As I woke up to the NewSong's "The Christmas Shoes" from their "Sheltering Tree" album I found myself in tears. The lyrics of this poignant song had awaken me from my deep sleep, and touched the depths of my heart, because of this sad but wonderful story of a little boy who so desperately wants to buy his dying mother her last Christmas gift. He doesn't have enough money for the shoes and turns to the man behind him begging for his help. This song is so heart-wrenching. DO NOT listen to this song while you are driving alone in the car, since you'll no doubt be bawling so much that your eyes will fill up with tears and you'll get those embarassing mascara runs. The Christmas Shoes lyrics

This year, NewSong has repackaged the song "The Christmas Shoes" into its new Christmas album, "The Christmas Shoes" appropriately reflecting it's popularity last season and this season. I became one of the fastest song to hit the charts in 2000 and made it to the Billboard's number one position in January 2001. NewSong is anything but new, because they have a long history, going as far back as 20 years ago when they started. You can learn more about them from their Biography section on NewSong's website.

I enjoyed all but two songs on the CD. Tracks 4 and 5, just weren't my style of Christmas music. All the other songs seem like traditional Christmas songs with a contemporary twist. If you listen to the story line the 6th song "Light Your World" which originally debuted in 1990, you'll see this is also another powerful song, about a lonely widow and how we can show God's love by remembering all those around us and sharing our light with them.
Light Your World lyrics

"The Christmas Shoes" and "Light Your World" are definitely two of my favorite songs on this CD, because of the story it tells. They have the ability to open up your heart and make you really want to be there, to help the little boy buy his mother a pair of shoes, to see the mother smile, or to comfort the widow, to bring her flowers, to stay a while and see her smile. After listening to these songs I feel so empowered to do good. I feel so full of hope. I feel charged to bring people the good news of Christ, to witness to them.

I highly recommend this CD. Especially now that it's the Christmas season, there couldn't be a better time to get this CD. If you aren't the kind of person to get seasonal CDs, I can assure you'll enjoy this CD for many many seasons to come.

When I first heard the Christmas Shoes I was literally in tears. That song touched my heart so deeply. I just recently thought about doing a Christmas Play based on that song. I think that alot of people need to hear this song and understand what this little boy was going through. But not only that but we need to understand what the guy was going through. I recommend this album to everyone.
