Silly songs, Saturday morning fun, Sunday morning values, and talking vegetables: ring a bell? Of course, it's VeggieTales! Adults and children alike can't stop humming and singing those silly songs (my gosh, it just keeps on replaying over and over in your head)!

Ever since it's conception in 1993, VeggieTales has produced 20 videotapes and 12 CDs! And now in December of 2002 it has produced its first big-screen movie Jonah. As you would expect, all the songs are hilarious and catchy, and a few are even sung by non-Veggie singers such as Newsboys, Anointed, Chris Rice, and Relient K. I have to admit that when we first saw the movie and listened to the CD, only a few songs caught our attention; however, it's just impossible to avoid listening to the CD over and over again if you have two young children at home (if you're a parent you know what I'm talking about). After a few replays, we came to appreciate the ingenuity of some of the songs (just as we had in the past with other Veggie songs).

The album has a little bit of everything from quite a few genres. It starts off with a silly song "Billy Joe McGuffrey" sung by Laura Carrot and the Veggie Gang, followed by a few more short, silly songs. Track #5, "Message from the Lord" is a really catchy chorus-line song, sung by Archibald Asparagus (a.k.a. Jonah). It is followed by the lament "It Cannot Be", where Jonah struggles to obey God's command and ultimately chooses the path of disobedience. "Second Chances" is a hand-clapping, good-time gospel choir tune sung by Anointed, which inspires Jonah and reminds us that God forgives our rebellious hearts again and again and restores us from our darkest circumstances. "Jonah Was A Prophet" teaches us about God's compassion and mercy, which contrasts with our own judgmental treatment of others. Newsboys adds "In the Belly of the Whale", a fun tune for grown-ups (although Anna does like the drums and the DJ scratch introduction). There is also a remake of "The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything" by Relient K. We have to say that we weren't too impressed with their grunge style (but that's just personal taste).

Tracks 12-18 contain orchestrations from the movie score, which are very well done. No low budget soundtrack here -- instead, there is a full orchestra and a first-rate production effort. The motif of the score is "The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything", woven into a dynamic tale of a storm at sea, a Jaws-esque stalking by the great fish, and the march through the desert to Nineveh.

The CD appeals to both children and children at heart (and best of all, the theology is sound). The tunes are catchy, and you can't help but hum them over and over again. Overall we were very impressed with this soundtrack. Hooray for wholesome Biblical family entertainment in the midst of this world!
