Delirious "Deeper: The Definitive Worship Experience"

Title: Deeper: The Definitive Worship Experience
Category: Alternative
Artist/Group: Delirious
Rating: 4 / 5
The latest Delirious album is entitled, “Deeper: The Definitive Worship Experience”. It serves as a greatest hits album as much as a definitive worship experience. Most of the songs are from early Delirious albums. For example, 12 of the 25 tracks are from “Cutting Edge”, Delirious’ 1995 debut album.

There are four new versions and two remixes on this CD. "Did You Feel the Mountains Tremble?", "I Could Sing of Your Love Forever", “The Happy Song”, "Lord, You Have My Heart", “I’m Not Ashamed”, and “Revival Town” are the songs redone or remixed. The new versions and remixes are not very different from the original versions. The most audible difference can be heard in slight variations in the way lead vocalist, Martin Smith sings the songs.

The irony in these remixes is the reason why they do not stand out as significant or noteworthy. This is because of the plethora of remixes of Delirious’ songs such as “I Could Sing of Your Love Forever” and “Did You Feel the Mountains Tremble?” from other Christian artists through the years.

As I was listening through this album, I did really enjoy it and I felt the flow of the album was extraordinary from the early songs to more recent songs such as “Follow” and “Jesus’ Blood.” I particularly liked the live recording of “Come, Like You Promise” from a lesser-known Delirious album, Live & in the Can. It captures the spontaneous and contagious passion for God found in Delirious’ worship songs. The one new track on the album, "Not Forgotten" is a poetic and inspiring song of worship declaring that God will not be forgotten and His people will continue to sing and proclaim His glory and name. The second verse goes like this:

Faith is bigger than glory
Faith is stronger than pain
Hope is higher than rainbows
Hope is all we’ve got
And we’ll keep the flame, ablaze...

For those who have not listened much to Delirious, this double-CD album is a worthwhile purchase. For those who have been following and enjoying Delirious’ music through the years, this album is not as necessary a purchase because you will most likely have all these songs in your collection. But as I listened through the album, I sang along with the earlier songs such as “Message of the Cross” and “Shout to the North”, and later songs such as “History Maker” and “Deeper”, and more recent songs such as “Jesus’ Blood” and was able to join in with Delirious in worshipping God.

As Delirious’ songs have changed through the years, the passion and fury of worship has not. In this album, you will find songs of reality and struggle, of the determination and resolution. Indeed, these are songs of experiencing God in worship.
