C.S. Lewis once wrote something to the effect that praise completes joy. When I come across a piece of music that I love, I feel that telling others completes my joy! So allow me to praise the Vineyard UK's summer release, Holy, by saying how much I love it. Having roomed with a Vineyard worship leader who's personal friends with the drummer of the UK team, I've come to love and appreciate their songs. Past successes include "Come, now is the time to worship", "Hungry", and Halleluyah (your love is amazing), but their latest studio release is my favorite so far.

Holy exemplifies the style of the Vineyard UK. As usual, the music is RAW and powerful. The first five tracks and track number nine are my favorites. They happen to be the most gospel-centered as well. The first song, “Thank you for the cross” reminds us of our wickedness before God and how deserving we are of His condemnation apart from the cross. It sets the tone for the rest of the CD. Track number two, “What a love (Redeemer)”, extols the love of God through his redemptive sacrifice on the cross. The third song, “Holy”, takes it’s cues from the "songs of heaven" in Revelation and praises God for how worthy he is. This song really gets my worship juices going! And track number four, “I have been redeemed”, is personal. The songwriter experiences God’s forgiveness through the blood of Christ in the midst of personal sin and shame.

It's unusual for me to like more than two or three songs on a CD but with Holy, I keep coming back to six. In short, these praise and worship songs have really ministered to my heart. The music is rocking and the lyrics are simple enough to point you back to the gospel. For those of you who are only familiar with the Vineyard USA, I’d encourage you to cross the Atlantic and get a taste of British culture. You might find Holy to be as uninspiring as Yorkshire pudding, but at least you’ll taste the difference!
